UK DIVERS BREAK WORLD RECORD FOR THE MOST NUMBER OF DIVERS IRONING UNDERWATER AT THE SAME TIME IN AID OF THE RNLI.

128 scuba divers braved the freezing winter temperatures today, 10 January 2009, to attempt to break the world record, currently held by the Australians, for the most number of divers ironing at the same time underwater. The previous record was 72 but the British divers managed to get 86 ironing within a 10 minute period and this also included 6 freedivers. Water temperatures were in the region of 5 degrees Celsius and air temperatures as low as -2 degrees C. Divers covered the full range from technical diving with trimix to 55m to the shallow end at 6m.

The event took place at the National Diving and Activity Centre (NDAC) near Chepstow, Gloucestershire and was organised by Gareth Lock, Morag Ward and John Turnock of the Yorkshire Divers internet forum (www.yorkshire-divers.co.uk). In addition to breaking the world record, the aim was to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the charity of choice for the forum for 2008-2009. At the time of going to press, nearly 6000 had been raised from this event through application fees, sponsorship and a charity raffle.

Photographs of this event are available by contacting Tim Moran (thewainhouse@hotmail.com) or Gareth Lock (gareth.lock@imagesoflife.co.uk)

What can I say - we had a brilliant day even though it was freezing in the water and chilly out of it.

We've been considering burningone of the wooden ironing boards that we used and putting the ashes in a cylinder - the ashes of the diving world.

The thought that we might beat the Aussies at something did spur our guys on a bit.

Good effort, But 5 degrees? They must be mad, I'm afraid as a fellow Pom I would still be joining the Aussie effort at those temperatures...

Always thought we should do an Aussie theme Extreme Underwater BBQ-ing rather than ironing anyway- with those cute little round BBQs

All that salt on the meat won't be good for our health either and I'm not into soggy garlic bread & salads

Seadragon,
Funny you should ask the having a beer underwater question. Your dedication to the Australian cause of 'beer drinking' is clearly slipping. That said I didn't actually do this but people from our dive club did, so I guess my dedication is no better (that and I now live in Norway!)

Anyway. The guys were a little stressed and wanted to have a bit of fun and blow off some steam. So why not go for a dive under Swansea Bridge (which has extreme tidal movement) and have a beer!? Basically, by keeping your thumb over the top of the bottle, take a breath, remove reg, mouth to bottle, blow a small amount of air into the bottle and tip to drink.....the air does the work for you!!!

Now I'm guessing you have to deal with a little salt water taste and the possiblity of you putting to much air and all but making a beer bong outta it, but anyway.

I'd like to see the Poms do this with their cup of tea.....

Funny...coming from a country that hate and are outright hated by the French I wouldn't have thought bragging about their wine would've been in your mindset.

That said, I mentioned nothing of you doing it with wine or beer. I mentioned your cup of tea. I know you guys wouldn't try it with a beer, hell with the water temp over there the beer would get too cold for what you lot are used to drinking.

Us lot as you put it....don't forget we are decendants of you lot! And you silly buggers sent us to a tropical island with great beaches and warm water(in some places) and decided to stay in that grey, miserable place called England. I always find that amusing.

Congrats on the new record by the way.

Cheers, Joel.
