Wreck Description: On the 24th of February 1875 the Gothenburg was driven up onto Old Reef, east of Townsville with 120 people on board. 100 of those people were to loose there lives and the ship, with its cargo of gold from the Northern Territory was completly lost. Most of the gold has since been recovered, leaving only a scant outline of the 500ton Steamer. The Gothenburg now lies in shallow water on a slope beside the reefs edge, its huge boilers are its most prominent feature, an interesting second wreck for those doing the Yongala thing
