Two stroke oil

It seems with the popularity of the 4 stroke engine, two stroke oil is getting harder to get. Just did the rounds of the usual suspects, Kmart/Woolworths and it is nowhere to be seen.

Big W (always the best price) used to sell it in a 5 lt container, however, about 18 months ago they went to a 4 lt drum, but the price went up by several dollars. I have not seen it in any Big W store for 6 months.

Like Bazza said, Supercheap Auto. They have regular 20% sales, time to stock up.

Miranda woolies still has normal unleaded all nsw changes by 2011

I know Bazza usess e10 but as some one who drives petrol tankers do not use e10 some sites even have stickers warning against its use in marine motors.

Also when a site changes from regular ulp to e10 the rubber on the end of the dip sticks dissapears with in 1 month cant be good.

Is 2 stroke oil just that? or is there a difference between marine and land based? IE water cooled and air cooled. If not try motor cycle shops. I think you will find the shortage is somthing to do with the 2 stroke marine engine ban. I dont remember details but i read in a magazine that they are fazing them out, to stop pollutants.
People are going to keep riding 2 stroke dirt bikes tho.

4x4xEric,
There are subtle differences in 2 stroke oils for different applications, and the generic oils may not always be the best for your engine. I find if I use generic oils in my Johnson it can be hard to start as the VRO lube system tends to leave an oil residue in the cylinder when stopped which can foul the plugs. OE oil minimises this effect, but is expensive at $10/litre.

There have been some rumours that 2 strokes are being phased out, but I suspect they are being generated by 4 stroke manufacturers as both Evinrude and Mercury have produced 2 strokes which meet the emission requirements, as well as matching the economy and noise levels of 4 strokes. The new 2 strokes use a different grade of oil to the older models, and it is getting harder, and therefore more expensive to access my older 2 stroke oil.

As my 2001 Johno has almost 2000 (trouble free) hours on it, I will be looking to replace it soon, and so far the new generations 2 strokes are looking good.

Alan
