dunno much about the industry over there (or on the east coast for that matter...)
but a way of getting extra sea time can be doin deckie work for fishos, the various rescue organisations, or touristy whale watchin etc... tours.
i got a lot of my hours driving a ski boat :-)

Many years ago in Vic, time on rec vessels over 4.9m used to count as sea time towards a coxswain's. Maybe it still does?

I had a quick look on the site but couldn't find the reference, and don't have time to look any further right now...

i was told that hours in any boat counts, but, they weren't of equal value. that is, 1500 hours in a ski boat were worth 700 hours. it certainly wasn't the only experience i had but i was told it all counted.

also, as my experience was limited to a lot of closed water stuff, my coxswain ticket is likewise limited until i got more experience in appropriate conditions
