G'day,

Since March 2011, I've been logging my journey as a private dive boat owner on my web site at http://www.borrett.id.au/interests/diveboat.htm . I purchased a 1988 Haines Hunter V17L, which had been used as a private dive boat by its previous two owners. It's one very interesting journey with so many new aspects to take in and learn.

Fortunately, I've had magnificent help and advise from private dive boat owners in the VSAG and Getunder dive clubs.

First up, I made sure all of the required safety gear was in place. Then I made up new shot lines, plus lines for the drift and reef buoy setup the dive club uses.

In the two months up to Christmas I had a heap of work done on the boat and trailer to make sure everything was up to the standard I wanted. This included: replace dead tacho, added additional instruments and sound system, new marine AM radio, engine service, hydraulic service, hull repairs, trailer service, trailer rear axle replacement, roller replacements, five sets of trailer wheel and tyre replacements, five sets of bearing protectors, rebadging, second battery, custom made dive ladder, boat latch launch and retrieve system, outboard permatrim hydrofoil and on the list goes. Not much change out of $12,000.

It was simply fantastic to finally get out and dive from the boat in recent weeks with a heap of the niggles removed. But of course, I found a few new ones. That's boat's.

From our very first dives from this boat, my partner had problems using the small dive platform to get back into the boat. So her Xmas wish was a new dive ladder. Thus a custom made, nice and wide, stainless steel dive ladder with long grab handles was added to the boat just days before Xmas. I had to gift wrap it for Xmas day. Then Cheryl decided that on the first time out with the new ladder, we had to have tinsel on it. The embarrassment! [;)] Still, it's amazing the difference this relatively simple change of a better ladder has made.

Now, if only I could figure out how to properly use all of the electronic gizmos to navigate to and properly locate dive sites.

Best Regards, Lloyd Borrett.

Well that's the definition of a boat.

A hole in the ocean to pour money into. :D

Well...tinsel on a dive boat ladder...oh the shame of it all! I'll give Cheryl heaps about that when we're back at work! But what a great rig....I drove a Haines 17 footer once quite some years back for an Abalone diver. It was his first day out as a licenced diver. We headed out from San Remo and dived around Kilcunda. There was a massive Mercury on the back and it powered along slicing the top of swells at 40 plus knots. Couldn't believe the ride quality in the conditions and how it would come off the top of the swell and cut back in flat and stable every time. My Savage tinnie would have rammed by bum through the nape of my neck had I tried that! Mind you the Ab. divers modify the rig somewhat - they typically take up the floor, and lay another few layers of glass just to make it bomb proof!
Must be nice having all those niggles straightened out - now I feel an overwhelming sense of guilt. I'll have to check the bearings; bilge pump; tyres; lights, fuel lines and compressor filters tomorrow.
