Piercings under pressure. Dermal piercings

I've been searching around the place for any insight into what effect diving will have on my dermal piercing. A dermal sits on the surface of the skin with an anchor under the skin. I see lots of questions and answers i regards to navel, ears, eyebrows.. ect. But I can't find anything about dermals. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea about what effect pressure with have on that sort of piercing. Admittedly I'm only novice about to do my open water but my partner is doing his tech 45-50 and I would like to join him at some stage in the future.

If anyone has any idea it would be much appreciated if you could please let me know! :)

Thank you,

Amelia

A great topic. There was a French study done on 156 divers with different piercing types back in 2011. They concluded that the only notable effect was the attraction of sharks, which depended on the depth in mm of the piercing. Each mm represented one metre of average shark length that was attracted to each particular diver, so:

Piercing depth = 1mm, you attract 1 metre sharks
Piercing depth = 3mm, you attract 3 metre sharks
Piercing depth = 5mm, you attract 5 metre sharks

And so on, you get the idea.[B)]

[:-}] Now all jokes aside, there will be no effect on you and the salt water will probably be good for your piercings. And no, you won't attract sharks.

Now for a more considered response, which should address any concerns.

In all reality, there are a few dependants, where your piercing is and if you are going to use a dry or wetsuit. Let me explain.

If your piercing is likely to be covered by a wetsuit, then it could be pulled as you put the wetsuit on and take it back off again. It will be fine for the dive itself. A drysuit would be more forgiving in this area because it has a lot more room inside and is not a tight fit like a wetsuit or semi dry suit needs to be.

If your piercing is on your face or an area that is not covered by the wetsuit, then there should be no discomfort at all. You may notice it a bit colder than normal, but this would be similar to if it is exposed on a cold day in the middle of winter.

I get the impression that your original question was more directed towards the pressure pressing the piercing into your skin more.....? If so, you have absolutely nothing to fear here. Our bodies are mode up of mostly water and the ocean water will exert the piercing to exactly the same pressure as it will exert on the rest of your body, meaning that it won't press into your skin any more than it is now.

My only caution would be that being in water for an hour or so tends to soften our skin all over, like being in the pool for an hour - we all go wrinkly, so if your piercing is pulled or knocked, it could bleed a little or get ripped out. Obviously the better it has healed, the less likely this will be. If it gives you trouble now on the surface with infections or any other issues, you'd possibly be best to remove it completely.

So on the whole, I think you will be fine and you will know now after reading this if you will or won't.

Welcome to Dive Oz, it is a great resource and welcome to the amazing underwater world.

Pressure only has an effect when there are air spaces involved. Pressure won't have an adverse effect on 'solid' body tissues (such as skin) or the piercing itself.

Of course sea water does contain various germs so make sure the piercing is properly healed.

Actually Jason I have found drysuits the worst for piercings, especially those in the ear. I have about seven piercings in my ears and have had them pulled out by my neck seal a bunch of times. Most were done before I started diving except for an upper ear one and that was VERY PAINFUL to dive with a hood on whilst it was healing.

No pressure problems though.
