Hi all,

I know recreational dive medicals aren't covered by Medicare, but I was wondering if anyone has had any luck claiming them on private health insurance? Specifically, through NIB?

I couldn't imagine there would be any cover from private insurance. Private insurance only kicks in when you are admitted as an inpatient in a hospital. Extras cover is generally for 'ancillary' services like physio, dental, etc

I have never heard of anyone claiming dive medicals on private insurance.

It really will depend on your insurer and what level of extras cover you have. I have not heard of any insurer covering dive medicls myself though.

Why not just ring them and ask? I've always found NIB open and easy to deal with.

Thanks all.

FYI, I got in touch with NIB and they basically said they don't cover any services performed by a GP, which in this case includes the dive medical.

I was under the understanding a diving medical (to learn to dive) was no longer required unless you had age/health issues.

I think the degree of insistance depends a bit on the training body under which the potential instruction will occur.....10 yr ago I was 42 and told IANTD insisted on a current medical at time of beginning a new cert.....? but TDI it seems just need you to certify that you have no problems. This may not be true now.....or maybe even then, but it is what happenned to me
