My poor experience with SSI and an old shoddy dive shop.

So, I'm livid and I need to vent.

Unfortunately I wasn't aware of this forum when I signed up for Metrodive's program
( www.diveoz.com.au/index.php/forum/new-di...ourne-dive-shop.html )
because it might have saved me a lot of drama.

I completed my open water course and waited for confirmation from SSI that they received my documents. ... and waited... I called them several times to get them to send my documents "we lost your photo", so I'd resend the one I sent originally... "we'll get back to you" and of course never did.
Not surprisingly the school closed, and SSI have no proof I finished the course.

I sent SSI the emails in January back and forth including the ones from the instructor saying that I had finished the course. SSI told me they would look into it. Sure enough, no replies. A fornight later I chase them up and I get the same rubbish service as I did from MetroDive.

This began in JANUARY 2015. Literally dozens of emails and phone calls to SSI later - (first to "Callan" then Subala Kamalan and then later with Leslie Paul) who told me today (Yup 10 MONTHS later), that the diver Ben Haddock said I didn't fulfill the requirements of course and thus nothing could be done.

This is disgusting customer service from SSI, and I will never ever do one of their courses again. I will make sure that anyone from or entering the diving community knows how terrible SSI / MARES customer service is.

If anyone wants or needs the email chain to verify this let me know

Sounds like SSI are the meat in the sandwich here.

Out of interest how much did you pay for the course?

Did you buy it through Groupon or similar?

If yes, have you raised the issue with them?

Yeah one of the coupon things... I hadn't thought of contacting them. It's a good idea.

I would have much more sympathy for SSI if it hadn't taken them 10 months and all those emails and calls to just ask the instructor if he recalls me finishing the course.

That both instructor and SSI/MARES are so slow and disorganised does not give me any faith in them having proper corporate governance for other things such as maintenance and safety.

Theres a lot more to it than that, if the instructor for what ever reason hasn't submitted documentation they can't just certify you because you say you passed or because your instructor says you passed for that matter.

Ask them for your training records and go to a reputable instructor to finish what you need to finish.

Kloppy,
I'd hold off canning SSI at this stage as they were probably getting the run around from this operator the same as you were. This "shop" also claims to represent PADI which is unlikely, and I strongly suspect that it is the operator causing you, (and looking at Trip Advisor) others drama. Most dive shop operators try to look after their customers to build their business'. My advice is to save yourself grief and put that experience behind you. Scuba diving is a great activity, particularly in Victoria, and an open water course with a reputable operator will be an enjoyable experience and a doorway to amazing experiences. Unbelievably good deals are usually exactly that!

Sadly, I'm not even surprised to stumble upon this thread, and I joined the forums so I could add in my experiences with metro dive.

I did my training with them several years ago and did a numbers of dives afterwards, including a couple of speciality courses. One day, they closed up shop and vanished! I then discovered that none of my qualifications were sent to SSI - not even my original open water diver!

It took around three months of hunting the owner down and speaking directly to SSI to get some of my dives acknowledged, but I still ended up hundreds of dollars out of pocket and with not much to show for it.

I've heard a number of similar stories to mine so it seems to have been a terribly run business. He apparently now owns a shop in Hastings, but I wouldn't go near it with a ten foot pole!
