Hi all,

Just got my OW last month and now i'm looking to buy some gears.
the way i dive is just for fun, exploring, will be frequently dive - at least 1-2 /month, will stop at 30m depth ( that what i think at the moment)

I have been looking for Dive shop ( Extreme water, scubadoctor) but all the gear are really really expensive.
i have a list in my mind but not sure about the brand, or the order of gear that i should buy. Could you please help me out, i kind of confuse at the moment.
Any comments /advice would be greatly appreciated.
1 - Prescription mask - Apollo SV2 - it the only 1 that come with a prescription lens( i got Asian nose, so it been hard for me to find a mask that let me easily squeeze my nose. Last resort i have to try and plug the nose from under)
2 - Dive computer - i know i want a wrist type ( doesn't matter about size)- i just want a basic type that can help me planning, depth, stop point, compass,
3 - BCD - I know i want a wing type BCD. that's all i know
4 - Wetsuit - Scubadoctor was telling me that Probe idry 7mm is the best selling - cost 555$ ( IMO, i'm not sure about the brand, but isnt 555$ a bit expensive? and the brand is not as good as Cressi or Scubapro or Mares? please correct if i'm wrong )
5 - Regulator and tank : for these 2 i really not keen to buy as they require service and i have absolute no idea.

my budget around 1k or bit less if i can help.
My plan is to buy mask, computer in this month. then BCD next 2 months, Wet suit next 2 months, and so on.

Also i am very keen to go to dive ( i can only do weekend), anyone interested for a beginner buddy, please feel free to in box.

Thank you for reading such a long post and please pardon my English.
Thank you you all again.

Babycover,
It is usually best to start with personal equipment, like Wetsuit, boots, hood, mask and fins as the other stuff can be rented. You can get prescription masks from other suppliers, like OzBob. You might also look for package deals as they can save you lots of money. Where did you get your OW??, and roughly where do you live?

The best value recreational computer at the moment is the Cressi Leonardo. It will does single gas nitrox and has gauge mode so it can be used as a backup bottom timer if you move onto more serious diving later on. Currently $279 at scuba Doctor.

3 - BCD - I know i want a wing type BCD. that's all i know

Dive Gear Express do a 25lb basic hogarthian backplate and wing package for $309USD which is about $430AUD.

For temperate waters you'll want the stainless steel backplate. My preference would be a 32lb wing but for the money the 25 will do. You won't need weight pockets just distribute weight between a belt and cam straps.

It would be worth contacting Chis Holman or Barry Hallett to see how close they can come with HOG gear.

Most of the brand name stuff is just Chinese made crap. I've used Seatec stuff for years, it's Australian made, excellent quality and indestructible. A 7mm semi-dry goes for $475.

www.seatec.com.au/vortex-super-stretch-7-mm/

5 - Regulator and tank : for these 2 i really not keen to buy as they require service and i have absolute no idea.

Both are worth owning if you dive regularly, regs don't need servicing anywhere near as much as the shops claim and tanks need an annual hydro which costs around $60 a year.

Regs wise I like Apeks stuff, you'll be looking at around the $800 mark for a set of XTX50 regs with occy, gauge and inflator. Expensive I know but they'll last you 100year and parts are plentiful. There are certainly cheaper alternatives available.

12.2 litre Faber Steel tanks are pretty good.

my budget around 1k or bit less if i can help.

Yeah, triple that.

My plan is to buy mask, computer in this month. then BCD next 2 months, Wet suit next 2 months, and so on.

........then camera, drysuit, light, better camera, twinset, better drysuit, rebreather and so on.......it never ends.

Hi AB, thanks for the advice. Will look into the OzBob site. I got my OW at extreme water sport in rosebud and live in Melbourne. Extreme water sport services and teaching are excelent as well as their hire gear price. However their price of gears is just over the roof which i dont really understand why they doing it.

Hi Padi Police, thank you for your advice. I was looking at the same dive computer. BCD - since i quite a big guy (102 kg) i think i would need a a bigger BCD? I saw a red bcd before, is there any colour BCD out there that around 500 mark.(scuba doctor sell 1 for 1k @@)
Seatec wetsuit have a lots of option (type of zip, etc) wouls youe recommend please?i heard seatec predator semi dry is really good(predator).your thought? I would spend a bit over 500 for a really good semy dry, so i can dive here in winter of Melbourne. My cold tolerance quite high, i can go short and shirt in summer here(temp about 16-18).i definetly not consider a dry suit as it way over my budget .

A backplate and wing setup is a one size fits all proposition, fit depends on how you thread the webbing not the physical size. Theres plenty of divers 100kg plus using them. If you contact Chris Holman who is on this forum he'll sent you a setup to try.

The Predator is a good suit.
