Hi and thnkyou for taking time to read this (and hopefully post)

In December 2015 I got the opportunity to do my PADI open water and then adventure (deep diver) speciality. It was up in Cairns and got to see the reef while learning. It was awesome and I enjoyed every bit of it.

I also had fun getting my bouncy and breathing down right. One of my best friend joined me on the dive and we are now living in Melbourne. It is his 30th in April and I want to organize a Night dive course for his birthday.

My question is, where in Melbourne offers PADI night diving courses?
Are there any schools to avoid?
Is the gear included in the dive? (A few schools I have enquired with wont rent you a torch (primary or secondary))

A work colleague has 2 bcds and regs he has offered to loan to us including tanks and wet suits.
Would it be worth doing a few dives with his gear to get used to it before doing the night dive in his gear.

Unfortunately I'm doing this behind his back (so its a surprise) and on a limited budget ($300 per person).

Thanks again in advance.

I admire your intention with the surprise birthday gift for your friend but I see very little value in a Night Diving Course. You would be better off finding a club that is doing a night dive and do that.

I'm struggling to think what a Course would include:

Find a shallowish dive site
Wait for dusk
Grab a good light
Go diving

Make sure you have a plan on how to return to the boat/jetty/whatever and expect to use more gas in the unfamiliar environment

If you're concerned tell the guide that it's your first night dive.

Enjoy

Although I have been refused permission to do a night dive on a GBR live aboard because I didn't have a night diving cert! As said there isn't a lot to know about night diving other than it's darker than day diving. Basically, if you have two light sources and a compass you could just join up with any of the groups regularly night diving piers, and the best way to find and join these divers is to join the FB group, Scuba Dive Melbourne. Yes, it's always better to be familiar with your gear, and moreso at night when you may not easily see things.

Thanks guys for all the advise.

I have decided to take him on a couple shore dives this weekend to get us comfortable with the gear and then charter a boat dive or pier night dive with a group in a couple weeks. (If I can sort out the torches.)
