Frustrated begginer - aborted dive - did not even made it to the buoy :(

Hi there
Has anyone suffered an anxiety or panic attack before diving?
I am not a very experienced diver, only have 7 logged dives.
My last dive was 3 weeks ago (Montague Island, NSW), it was a very nice dive, we had a bit of current but I was fine and loved the seals :silly: .

Last weekend I attempted to do the Long Reef dive (Northern Beaches NSW) and failed :( . The ocean was a bit rocky and I must confess I had a little bit of anxiety plus was not very comfortable with the dive master (he was not very attentive or friendly, yes I know, I am a bit of a princess lol).

As per usual I was suffering from motion sickness but I always manage and don't let it get in my way, I jumped into the water and straight away the current pushed me to the wrong direction, I tired to swim to the buoy with no luck at all, my partner was also struggling so the skipper throw a rope for us to being able to get back to the boat, my partner decided not to continue with the dive so I started to feel more and more scared and went into panic mode. Of course I decided not to dive and went back on the boat.

I feel like a looser, I cannot believe that the other people on the boat did the dive and had fun while I let myself fail. There were 3 guys finishing their OW certification and they did the dive and had fun.

I would love to read your comments and advice.

Thank you in advance.

Ingrid

Any diver can cancel or abort any dive for any reason OR no reason at all.
If you are not up to a particular dive physically or mentally - don't let yourself be pressured into it.
You learned something about your personal limits that day and made it home safe - I don't call that failing.

There is always another day on the water.
Keep Diving.

Ingrid,
I have logged over 1500 dives and last Sunday just didn't feel right, and didn't dive. The others surfaced saying the conditions were ordinary, so I didn't miss much, but I also didn't feel I had failed. Some days things just aren't right and the smart decision is to abort. Better to have a bad feeling on the surface than 18 metres down! Tech divers are trained to abort for any reason, and their buddies would never question their decision. One of the precursors to anxiety is unfamiliarity, be it with your equipment, the site, the conditions, or a dodgy dive master. Experience will reduce this, though small things can still cause frustration no matter how long you are a diver.

The most important thing is to recognise when you aren't feeling comfortable, and to have the guts to pull the pin. Don't feel you need to prove anything to anyone else, and don't be pressured into doing something you are not comfortable with. Diving is supposed to be fun, and when it's not, don't dive! Keep at it, try to dive with an experienced buddy, and with people who support you.

Alan

Never feel bad about not being able to do a dive compared to other people.
Its really important that you set parameters when diving and stick to them, don't let other people convince you otherwise.
Any reasonably good diver will never judge you for a dive. I have many divers that I guide worry about air consumption and various other factors that affect a dive. My advice is always don't worry about how you compare to others. Take each dive as a lesson and look to improve next time. Sometimes you will improve in leaps and bounds at other times it will only be 1%.
Above all, have fun, thats why we all got into diving, even us tech divers!
