Hi All
I am thinking about getting my own BCD. I have been hiring the Scubapro Litehawk (back inflation) and love it. Someone sugested that the Oceanic BioLite Travel BCD was better, and then someone else even suggested a BP/W system because I like the freedom of the back inflation, but then I was also told by someone else that a BP/W would be a disaster for a beginner and that only experienced divers can use them.
I am a bit confused now :S .
Could anyone here please give me some advice?
Thank you in advance.
Ingrid

G'day Ingrid,

Tell that someone they're an misinformed idiot. At The Scuba Doctor we use harness and wing setups to train beginner open water divers, and as our hire gear.

You might also like the Cressi Ultralight Lady BCD, see https://www.scubadoctor.com.au/diveshop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=4075

Best regards, Lloyd Borett.

Hi Toro

I think you should get a second opinion, we teach all our new divers in BP&W's most are school students diving for the very first time. They instantly love the freedom and trim, they giggle at the other students trudging to the water in massive jacket style BCD's filled with lead.

Give me a shout I will send you a BP&W for a weekend try diving at no charge, judge for yourself with a few dives. www.divetub.com.au/bcds.html

Cheers
Chriso

I used to use the Litehawk and it's a brilliant BCD. At the risk of confusing you even more, add the Aqualung Zuma to your list of lightweight BCDs to try. It's also a rear-inflate and a lot lighter than the Litehawk. A couple of years ago, I used one for 50 dives in 3 weeks in a variety of conditions and found it incredible.

I've never used a BP&W so I can't give you any advice there. I'd love to try one but just haven't had a chance yet. Having said that, I agree with the two replies above - any new setup is going to take a little getting used to, but there's no reason a beginner can't use a BP&W.

My 2c.

I have the biolite and it is now my primary. zero storage - everything must hang off your or you add belt pockets. Most dont come with a belly band as standard. I am happy without it but would look it get it.

I included in my recent gear update video if you want to see it

Read this "old" article :)

Started as a newbie (20y after OW without diving) with a BP/W. Good stuff, love it.

Thank you for your advice Chriso.

I would love to take your offer and try a BP&W. Do you mind if I ask you where are you guys located? I would like to see if I can go to your store.

Thank you again.

Too easy, we are in Perth but ship Try Dive all over the country on a weekly basis, just shoot me an email and we can put together a suitable rig for you to take diving.

Cheers
Chris
