Hello Folks,
I'm a relively new diver ( under 50 dives) and I'm planning on taking a rescue diving course soon on Gili Air. I've done my OW and AOW with PADI. The diving resort I would like to go with teaches an SSI rescue course. Would there be any disadvantage to me doing this course (rather than PADI rescue diver) ? I do plan on eventually doing my dive master and possibly technical diving in the future. Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,
K

If you're planning on doing your DM through PADI you'd be better off doing Rescue diver through them too as it's a prerequisite for the DM course.

From a technical diving perspective it doesn't matter what agency you do it through.

Until you reach Instructor level the SSI and PADI certifications are interchangeable. Once you decide to become an instructor you must select the agency you wish to work with PADI or SSI. Basically consider them the Coke and Pepsi of the dive world, different cans but the same stuff inside, mostly :)
An SSI Dive Master will have to do one more course than a PADI diver, Science Of Diving. This is a dry course, theory only, but it teaches a lot about the physics and history of diving, which is very useful knowledge. If you became a PADI DM and then decided you wanted to do SSI instructor training you would need to complete the Science Of Diving before continuing.
I have a mixture of PADI, SSI, SDI and TDI all of which have equally counted for my SSI DM and Instructor certifications. The main reason for doing SSI is that it should be cheaper than PADI. PADI charge around twice as much for their training materials, so a shop has to charge more to do it.
The certifying agency will have no effect on your Tech diving, the certification matters, but the certifying agency it comes from is not important
