Hi There,

has anyone noticed any large aggregations of globefish (Diodon nicthemerus) anywhere? Particularly around Portsea? I stumbled across a large school just off the pier there back in January and again in February. I was suprised to find out that this is not a common event, and that not much is known about these fish aggregating in large groups. Perhaps it's some sort of spawning event, no-one is really sure. There are a few reports, but I'd like to find out if others have had the same experience and flesh out the knowledge. I find it hard to believe I could stumble across a rare event twice by sheer luck, so I thought I'd throw it out there to the diving community, particularly if you have video / pics and can be specific about where & when you saw them.

many thanks,

Markus

Have seen Globe fish aggregating at other sites like South Channel Fort, so maybe not that rare, Can,t say why they do it.

Hello Markus & Alan,

Helpful if we flesh out these sightings with an estimate of numbers so we all better know what you both are reporting. Like Alan I have seen "Globe fish aggregating" at South Channel Fort. I thought it unusual enough to take some video - but the "ball" really only contained around 20 individuals.

If when Markus says "large aggregations of globefish" he is talking 100+ --> 1000 individuals, then no I have never seen anything like that and it would be very striking. (Not my most favorite fish by a fair country mile though!).

I know number estimates are hard, and that nobody want's to be caught out "fibbing" in the emotion of the moment, but some "guesstimates" can be really helpful to the discussion.

cheers,
packo

Thanks Packo, you're right. The aggregations I've seen that spawned (no pun intended) this thread were 80-100 individuals. Anyone seen that many in one spot at one time?
