If you do not know what a Domain
Name is and why you would want one, then you should read on. A Domain Name is a
websites "address", the bit that comes after the www. like
www.diveoz.com.au
my domain name is "diveoz". The bit that comes after that designates what
country the domain is from or what type it is, again, in my case,
www.diveoz.com.au
the .com.au means an Australian Commercial domain name. This is just one of the
main TLD (Top Level Domain Names) here in Australia, there are many new TLD that
have recently become available world-wide, such as .biz, .info etc
You cannot have a website without a domain name of some description.
There are restrictions on registering a domain name in Australia with the
.com.au ending, the domain name MUST be derived directly from the business name,
you must have an ABN - Australian Business Registration Number or ACN -
Australian Company Number. In Australia, we also have 2 other "mainstream"
extensions which are .net.au and .org.au
One of the most popular extensions is the .com address, which really has no real
restrictions on who can register one or what domain name, as long as it's not
already registered, then, it's up for grabs, it's also much cheaper than any of
the "Australian" domain names.
It is quite popular for people to register more than one domain name, for
example, I could also register www.diveoz.com if it was available and have both
www.diveoz.com.au and www.diveoz.com point to the same website. But remember, I
do not have to derive a .com domain from my business name, so I am free to
register say www.australianscubadiving.com and have that point to this website.
In fact, if I wanted to, I could register 20 domain names and have them all
point to the same website.

Remember, once you have a domain name registered, you need a
Website, a place
to Host your
website and once it is all setup, it needs to be submitted to all the major
search engines
